Personal Bio

Deepinder K. Dhaliwal, MD, is the director of Refractive Surgery and the director of the Cornea Service at the UPMC Eye Center. She also serves as medical director of the laser center at UPMC. Dr. Dhaliwal is the founder and director of the Center for Integrative Eyecare at the UPMC Eye Center. She is a licensed acupuncturist and a pioneer in acupuncture treatment for dry eye conditions.

Dr. Dhaliwal earned her medical degree from Northwestern University where she was the recipient of several prestigious awards. She completed her ophthalmology residency and served as chief resident at UPMC. She completed a fellowship in refractive surgery under the supervision of J. Charles Casebeer, MD, who founded the first refractive surgery center in the United States. Dr. Dhaliwal also completed a fellowship in anterior segment surgery at the University of Utah. She is an associate professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh School Of Medicine.

Board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Dhaliwal teaches refractive surgery techniques to other ophthalmologists, both nationally and internationally. In addition to teaching and pursuing research, she has published several book chapters and many journal articles, and serves on the editorial board of several ophthalmology journals. She has been selected by her medical peers for “The Best Doctors in America” honor for several years.
