Personal
Bio
Kerry
D. Solomon, MD, is the Arturo and Holly Melosi professor of ophthalmology
at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and a world-renowned
surgeon specializing in cataract and refractive surgery and corneal
transplantation at the Storm Eye Institute. He holds several key
positions at MUSC, including Director of the cataract, refractive
and cornea services at Storm Eye Institute, Medical Director of
the Magill Vision Center, and Director of the Magill Research
Center.
Dr.
Solomon joined the MUSC faculty fifteen years ago, following his
completion of his fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore,
Maryland. At Hopkins, Dr. Solomon specialized in cataract and
refractive surgery and corneal transplantation. Prior to his fellowship,
he completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University
of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky and an internship
in medicine at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. In addition,
Dr. Solomon has completed a fellowship in ophthalmic pathology
at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center in Salt Lake
City, Utah, and completed both his doctorate in medicine and bachelor
degree at the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont.
In
addition to his local clinical practice and administrative duties,
Dr. Solomon is active in multiple ophthalmic organizations. He
is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, holds memberships
in a number of professional and scientific societies and is actively
involved on a national and international basis with many prominent
societies. He is a fellow with the American Academy of Ophthalmology
where he serves on several committees and also received an honor
award for his achievements. He is Chair of the Food and Drug Administration
liaison committee for the American Society of Cataract and Refractive
Surgery (ASCRS) and also serves as a member of various committees
for the ASCRS. Additionally, Dr Solomon is involved with the South
Carolina Medical Association, Charleston Ophthalmological Society,
South Carolina Society of Ophthalmology and the Charleston County
Medical Society.
Over
his approximately 20 years of practicing medicine, Dr. Solomon
has achieved status among the country’s best ophthalmic
surgeons, and has received dozens of awards, including the Lee
Nordan Refractive Surgeon of the Year Award, an award given to
the surgeon who has had the greatest impact in the field, by Cataract
and Refractive Surgery Today. He has been ranked as one of ‘America’s
Best Doctors’ annually for cataract and refractive surgery
since 2004. He has also been voted in the Top Fifty Opinion Leaders
in Ophthalmology in the world by his peers since 2005, the inception
of this award. He routinely speaks at both national and international
meetings and hospitals and to date has presented more than 500
lectures and live surgical demonstrations worldwide.
In
addition to speaking globally, he has written over 170 publications
including book chapters, book reviews, monographs and magazine
articles, and produced more than 30 surgical videos and has received
awards for many of these videos which are used as teaching tools
throughout the world. Finally, Dr. Solomon’s work has been
recognized by multiple popular magazines and newspapers including
the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Money, The Saturday Evening
Post, Redbook and Reader’s Digest. He has also been featured
in television specials such as PBS’s “Cataract Surgery”
as part of the ‘Healthy Body, Healthy Mind’ series,
which is currently airing across the United States and in over
140 countries worldwide.
But,
as Dr. Solomon puts it, practicing medicine is not all about awards
or positions, “practicing medicine is about loving what
you do, treating every patient like family, and knowing that if
you do your best, you can change people’s lives for the
better.”
