Education
Personal
Bio
A
graduate of Harvard College summa cum laude and Harvard Medical
School, Dr. Steinert received his ophthalmology training at the
Harvard-Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. He held faculty positions
at Harvard Medical School until being recruited in 2004 to the
University of California, Irvine, where he is Professor of Ophthalmology,
Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Director of Refractive, Cornea,
and Cataract Surgery, and Vice Chair of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Steinert’s career-long commitment to laser technology
and therapy led to his involvement in the first stage of excimer
laser refractive surgery and LASIK. While he was a Visiting Scientist
at M.I.T., his laboratory group was the second in the world to
begin studying the applications of the excimer laser in 1983.
He was in the first group of surgeons in the U.S. FDA trials of
PTK (phototherapeutic keratectomy) and PRK (photorefractive keratectomy),
and was the Medical Monitor for the FDA trial that achieved the
first FDA approval of PRK in humans in 1995. He has continued
to actively perform surgery, participate in clinical trials of
LASIK, PRK, and other refractive surgeries, teach and lecture
internationally, and write peer-review scientific journal studies,
chapters, and text books on refractive surgery.
Along the way, Dr. Steinert has held many leadership positions
in refractive surgery, including a term as President of the American
Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, current service as
Program Chair for that society, a term on the Board of Directors
of the International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS), and
a current appointment as Associate Editor for Refractive Matters
for Ophthalmology, the official journal of the American Academy
of Ophthalmology (AAO). He was a founding member of the Refractive
Surgery Interest Group of the AAO. He has been invited to numerous
academic programs as Visiting Professor and given many named lectureships.
A recent honor is being named the 2008 Barraquer Lecturer at the
AAO/ISRS, the most prestigious honor in refractive surgery. Dr.
Steinert is also a long-standing examiner for the American Board
of Ophthalmology.
