Surgeon Bio
Dr. William Schlichtemeier is a native Nebraskan. His ancestors came to Nebraska in the 1850’s. Dr. Schlichtemeier was born in Omaha. He graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University and the University of Nebraska School of Medicine. He did an internship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and four years residency in ophthalmology with several famous professors, including Drs. Jack Guyton, Saul Sugar, Gilbert O’Gawa, James Rowsey, David Carey and Cornelius McCole.
Dr. Schlichtemeier was stationed at Oakland Naval Hospital for two years to teach eye surgeons the techniques of corneal transplantation, intraocular lens implantation, and vitrectomy. He has personally taught over thirty surgeons the techniques of corneal transplantation. He was also a consultant to Letterman Army Hospital in San Francisco, Tripler Army Hospital in Hawaii, and Travis AFB Hospital in Sacramento. In 1978, Dr. Schlichtemeier served with the Christian Medical Society as a medical missionary to Honduras.
Dr. Schlichtemeier was the first ophthalmologist in Nebraska to do epikeratophakia and keratomileusis. He learned keratorefractive surgery (the fore runner to LASIK) in 1981 at the Jules Stein Eye Institute with Dr. Elander, Dr. Villasenor, Dr. Krumeich and Dr. Barraquer. He began doing epikeratophakia in 1982 with quite good results. He studied Radial Keratotomy at the Dean McGee Eye Center with Dr. Jim Rowsey and Dr. Jim Hayes and has been doing RK since 1983.
Dr. Schlichtemeier is the area leader in laser vision correction. More than 90% of Dr. Schlichtemeier’s laser vision correction patients can drive to work the next day.
