Personal Bio

Perry S. Binder, M.D. received his Bachelor of Science in Microbiology at the University of Illinois, his Master of Science in Microbiology at the University of Illinois, and his Doctor of Medicine at Northwestern University Medical School. Following an Internship at UCLA and an Ophthalmology Residency at the University of Southern California, he completed the prestigious Fellowship in Corneal Surgery and Diseases at the University of Florida. He subsequently became a full-time faculty member in the Division of Ophthalmology at the University of California in San Diego. He is currently in full-time private practice in San Diego, California.

Dr. Binder has served on the Board of Directors of the Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmologists, including a term as President. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of The International Society of Refractive Surgery since its inception and served as their President. He has been a founding member of the International Society for Contact Lens Research and also served as that society's President. He served as the Director of the Cornea Section for the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). He has been a member of the Editorial Board of 14 Ophthalmology Journals and has published over 300 scientific articles in the field of contact lenses, corneal surgery and pathology, ocular infections, and refractive eye surgery.

Dr. Binder has lectured in 40 states and twenty countries as an invited lecturer. He was twice elected to Town and Country Magazines list of the top physicians in America and has been listed annually in the book The Best Physicians in America. He was recognized by Good Housekeeping Magazine as one of the top 400 physicians in the United States. He has received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement award from the International Society for Refractive Surgery and from the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Binder has served as a consultant for 20 ophthalmic industry companies and has been a clinical investigator for the excimer laser companies VISX, Inc, Summit Technology, Inc., Novatec, Inc., Alcon, Wavelight, Ophthonix, and Advanced Medical Optics (AMO). He is currently the co-Medical Director for the IntraLase Laser/AMO.

Dr. Binder performed the first keratomileusis procedure in San Diego making him one of the first ophthalmologists to perform any refractive eye surgery in the United States. He began performing Radial Keratotomy over 27 years ago and was the second surgeon to perform Excimer Laser Photoablation in San Diego. Through his laboratory and clinical expertise, he has developed or improved upon all current refractive surgical procedures including laser assisted keratomileusis (LASIK), astigmatic keratotomy, and refractive lens implants.
